Sustainable landscaping, on the rise

Sustainable landscaping... is it the future?
Sustainable landscaping... is it the future?
Environmentally friendly lawn and garden care require quite strict maintenance discipline, including product selection right down to watering in the correct and necessary places when needed.

It comes as no surprise that many of us, even when not faced with a hosepipe ban or any other enforcement, are very naive in the correct practices to apply when caring for gardens and landscaping, especially with regard to the environment and sustainability.

An American study in 2008 by the National Gardening Association indicated that:

  • Nine out of 10 householders saw the importance of maintaining their garden in an environmentally friendly way
  • Just over half of all householders say that they are knowledgeable about lawncare and practicing 'good environmental' methods
  • A staggering thirty percent of householders admit that they are not at all, or not very, knowledgeable about how to care for landscaping to benefit the environment.

Making it clearer for the end user

Some mainstream manufacturers and suppliers in the industry are already making provisions and moves towards a 'greener' garden. For instance, check out the fantastic new Pellenc range of environmentally friendly gardening power tools to show how manufacturers are using technology to make headway in reducing emissions, noise and pollution.

There's also plenty that we can do to minimise environmental impact. ScottsMiracle-Gro offers advice on low-water usage tips for garden and lawn care, such as:

  • Water wisely: Try and rely on rainfall to water lawns and gardens as much a possible... don't always reach for the hose if there are clouds on the way.
  • Leave grass clippings on the lawn: Recycled grass clippings return organic matter and nutrients to the soil, an easy way to clean up and improve soil quality.
